The Minerals Management Service

By Alex Huang, Myrrhia Reed, Julia Callender, and Caitlyn Whittaker

MMS stands for Minerals Management Service. MMS is a program that watches the collection of natural resources. Their job is to make sure that not too many natural resources like oil and special marine species are taken from the earth. Some of the animals they protect are: Striped Dolphin, Alaskan Seal, Brown Pelican, and many other endangered animals.

They also try to figure out what to do when there is an oil spill. If a spill occurs the MMS employees need to know how to clean the animals and where it occurred. MMS has launched over 800 satellite-tracked CODE drifters to measure the surface ocean currents in areas of where there is oil and gas. CODE is a type of drifter that tracks the first three feet of the oceans surface. These satellites are very critical if a spill occurs, and if there is other trouble with animals or the oil balances. They send the satellites primary in U.S. waters, but also track other oceans, bays, harbors and other water sources. They link the satellites to computers so if a spill occurs, the employees are sent off immediately.

The MMS tries out different types of satellites to compare them to what they currently use. MMS inspectors fly out to the oilrigs and perform surprise inspections to be sure that the rigs are environmentally and operationally safe.

Thank You MMS for what you are doing to help our environment.
