Interview with Mr. Proffitt

Interview with Mr. Proffitt

By Grayson Arango, Emma Moorhouse, Julia McAdams, Merritt Howard

Mr. Proffitt was "Principal For A Day" at Main School. He and Principal Dr. Campos are ready to start the day!

Mr. Proffitt works at the Department of Social Services for the County of Santa Barbara. At social services there are 600 employees. Mr. Proffitt works as a part of the information systems (computer) group. He is a Systems Analyst. He is the one that makes sure the employees get the information they need to do their job.

Mr. Proffitt is also a volunteer at the Maritime Museum. The Maritime Museum provides history of Santa Barbara's nautical past to the public to help support the community. The museum also helps with a popular curriculum at Santa Barbara and Carpinteria's schools called the Jason Project. The museum helps county schools get funding for fun curriculum like Jason the Project. Mr. Proffitt fits in well with this activity because his main goal is to help the community. Maritime Museum teaches local history to the community. For example in Santa Barbara they help teach about the Chumash Indians. The museum is neutral to the current conflicts on pollution in the ocean. They state the facts about it but they let people make their own decisions.

Mr. Proffitt has a minor in Geology and he loves science. So, it makes sense that he has been taking part in the Jason Project for 9 years. This coming year Jason is going to be having their 14th expedition.

The Jason Project talks to kids around the world. They talk about marine life and land animals like bears and other interesting animals. This year Jason's expedition, "From Shore to Sea", Will be at the Channel Islands National Park, the waters of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and the densely populated California coastline. The Sanctuary extends 3 miles out to the sea from the shores of the islands. The NOAA, National Oceanography Atmospheric Association supports the Marine Sanctuary. Mr. Proffitt likes to work with the Maritime Museum and the Jason project because together they help students better understand their environment and in turn will help to take better care of it.
