Interview with Assemblywomen Hannah-Beth JacksonBy Jessica Perez
During our tour of the State Capitol we had an appointment to meet Assemblywomen Hannah-Beth Jackson. She arranged for our group to take a VIP tour of the Capitol, which ended, at her office. We actually were able to sit in her office for this interview. We asked her a few questions and she gave us some very informative answers.
"What environmental bills have you passed?" She told us that she is trying to pass a bill that makes sure that the oil that is drilled out in the Santa Barbara channel is piped to refineries instead of shipped in tankers. The reason that this is an important issue to her is because the vessels spit out so much diesel fuel and diesel fuels cause cancer. The air pollution in Santa Barbara is the second worst in the state. This is due to all the ships that travel up and down our coast. Assemblywomen Hannah-Beth Jackson is very concerned about our air quality because it affects our quality of life.
Another bill that she is working on is concerned with the threats of terrorism. She would like to see deadly chemicals like chlorine gas, ammonia, and hydrogen chloride gas not stored in large areas. Some chemicals combined could blow up a city the size of Carpinteria in about twenty minutes. She is proposing to we remove these kinds of products and use less dangerous products. Assemblywomen Hannah-Beth Jackson had lots more bills to talk about but we ran out of time. It was very interesting to see what she is doing to make our community a safe and health place to live.
