Canalino Elementary School

Interview with Canalino School’s principal, Lorenzo Moraza.

My name is Lorenzo Moraza and I am the principal of Canalino School. I started working at Canalino last year as a Vice Principal. I have been working for the Carpinteria Unified School District since the 1980-81 school year.

Canalino School is an elementary school. It currently has students in grades kindergarten through second grade, although in the past it had grades all the way to sixth, and in the near future it will have grades from Kindergarten to Fifth. It was built in 1954 on land that was once used for farming.

The name Canalino is derived from the North American Chumash Indians who occupied this area. In fact, the city of Carpinteria is believed to be named for the Canalino Indians who were good carpenters.
